Two Sherwood Park teens killed in a head-on vehicle crash this week are being mourned by the community.
Fort Saskatchewan RCMP were called to reports of the collision on Highway 21 near Township Road 542 around 9:12 p.m. Thursday night, a news release said Friday morning.
Police said evidence indicates a truck was driving in north in the southbound lane when it collided with an SUV. Inside the SUV were a 17-year-old girl and 16-year-old man from Sherwood Park who were pronounced dead at the scene. A 15-year-old girl who was also in the SUV was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
One of the victims has been identified as Keithan Peters, a football player from Sherwood Park. Both the Salisbury Composite Sabres and the Sherwood Parks Rams football teams issued statements of condolences identifying Peters.
“Sal Football is mourning the tragic and untimely death of our friend and teammate Keithan Peters in a devastating car accident on Thursday night. Rest In Peace KP. We will miss you,” said the Sabres in a tweet.
The Rams issued a separate statement saying Peters graduated from their program in 2018.
“KP was a gifted athlete and was also a part of the provincial champion Rams in 2017,” reads the Rams statement.
Alex Ollington has been identified by friends online as the second victim of the crash.
Police said the 45-year-old man driving the truck was taken to hospital as a precaution.
The investigation into the crash continues with police asking for witnesses to come foward, including anyone who may have dash cam footage of the vehicles around the time of the crash.
