Edmonton firefighters received more than 50 calls with reports of a strong gas smell in south Edmonton area Monday morning.

After receiving reports of a natural gas odour at a plant near 100 Street and 29 Ave, ATCO said Monday evening the odour was not due to a leak in its pipelines.

“The Edmonton Ethane Extraction Plant was doing scheduled maintenance work and mercaptan got into the system and was vented into the air,” a spokesperson said. Pungent mercaptan is harmless and is often added to natural gas to make it easier to detect.

The incident has been resolved and there is no safety concern to the public.
