Good news, bad news, lots of news for the 15 (!) Edmonton Oilers overseas

Awaiting season to start

  • RD Evan Bouchard (#1) is with Sodertalje of HockeyAllSvenskan, set to play Lavoie’s Vasby IK on Oct 02.
  • C/LW Ryan McLeod (#6) is with EV Zug of the Swiss National League, which drops the puck on Oct 01.
  • LD Markus Niemelainen (#15) is back with Assat of Finland’s SM-Liiga, whose first game is Oct 02.

The only top-15 prospects currently without a team are goaltenders Olivier Rodrigue (#9) and Stuart Skinner (#12), along with unsigned college d-man Michael Kesselring (#14). Rodrigue was recently reported to be practicing but not playing for a club in Austria.

Among unsigned prospects, the loudest noise is being made by G Ilya Konovalov (#17), who is off to a sizzling start with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the KHL. Through 4 appearances he has recorded a minuscule 1.57 goals against average and a splendid save percentage of .950 (!), beaten just 6 times on 120 shots. The 22-year-old has one year left on his KHL pact, but factors in to the Oilers’ North American plans for 2021-22, possibly even in Edmonton.
