Two people have been fined for not wearing masks while riding Edmonton’s LRT system.
A total of three tickets were issued to the two individuals on Tuesday and Wednesday under the city’s temporary mandatory mask bylaw, said city spokeswoman Chrystal Coleman in a news release Friday. Each ticket carries a $100 fine.
“In both cases, city staff took an education-first stance and repeatedly tried to help the individuals understand the bylaw before issuing a ticket. The individuals were offered a free mask during many of these interactions,” said Coleman.
Coleman said a vast majority of Edmontonians have been following the mask bylaw since it was implemented on Aug. 1.
A small number of people continue to ignore the health and safety of others in the midst of this global pandemic.
COVID-19 cases have been rising in the Edmonton Zone in recent weeks. There were 773 cases reported in the zone Thursday and 668 in the City of Edmonton.
Edmonton is currently under the provincial “watch” list as there are more than 50 cases per 100,000 people in the city.
“Most Edmontonians are doing their part to help reduce the spread of the virus, and a re-doubling of this effort is needed as fall arrives and indoor activities increase,” said Coleman.
