Three people, including a firefighter, were sent to hospital following a house fire early Sunday morning.

Just after 4:30 a.m., Edmonton Fire Rescue Services responded to a fire in the area of 90 Avenue and 144 Street. In a news release Sunday afternoon, fire spokeswoman Adriana Amelio said a neighbour called 911 to report flames in the back of the house.

Two residents were evacuated and transported to hospital by emergency medical services, one with minor injuries and one in serious condition.

One of the fire crew members was also transported to hospital.

“The safety of our firefighters is our number one priority,” Amelio said. “We are looking into what happened so we may prevent it from happening again.”

The fire was believed to have started in the basement and was under control by 5:40 a.m. Fire investigators are determining the damage estimate and cause of the fire.
