Devon man faces charges after woman killed in vehicle collision

A male motorist faces several charges after he was involved in a collision that caused the death of a woman near Wetaskiwin, RCMP said in a news release on Monday.

Around 4 p.m. on Sept. 15, Wetaskiwin RCMP responded to a serious vehicle collision on Highway 814 at Township Road 470, just north of Wetaskiwin.

The RCMP investigation found that a pickup truck driving westbound on Highway 814 struck an SUV, causing it to roll into a ditch.

The 62-year-old sole occupant of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, which was attended by emergency medical services and fire services. The victim’s name will not be released.

Witnesses saw the male driver – the lone occupant of the pickup truck – flee from the scene. Edmonton RCMP’s Police Dog Service attended to assist in tracking the male and he was located and arrested nearby.

Nicholas James Dekelver, 36, of Devon, Alta. faces 11 charges including operation of a motor vehicle while impaired causing death, dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing death, criminal negligence causing death, failure to stop after accident resulting in death, operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited, flight from police, possession of stolen property over $5,000, resisting arrest and possession of methamphetamine.

Dekelver was brought before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded. He is scheduled to appear in court in Wetaskiwin on Thursday.
