Year in Review: Personal stories from a literary institution

Any good trip to Whyte Avenue involves at least a cursory glance through the main floor of the Wee Book Inn . Interviewing the people closest to the company and writing about their 50 years in business was both an honour and a privilege.

At the centre sat Darwin Luxford and his wife Leola, the pair who originally opened and ran the bookstore for decades. Darwin was a veritable renaissance man whose first location was a super narrow storefront, giving it the “wee” in Wee Book Inn.

Talking to current co-owners Carey and Ryan Luxford, as well as longtime staff, was like pulling back the curtain and having a chat with the wizard. This store I’ve loved as a customer for so many years opened up, the stories peeling back, leaving a trail of laughs and love.

Getting to know this Whyte Avenue institution through the stories of owners and staff made it a special experience.
