Year in Review: The resilience of artist Blair Brennan

I had a way early scoop on the amazing Mr. Chi Pig mural this year, enjoyed talking to local author Omar Mouallem about his must-read Praying to the West , and laughed my brains out reviewing Jason Kenney’s Hot Boy Summer: The Musical.

Each of these stories is an obvious choice for a 2021 favourite, but the one that really sticks out is the story of local artist Blair Brennan because, frankly, it just felt like we needed each other.

It was my favourite phone call of the year. I don’t have to tell you how hard the pandemic has been, but in Brennan’s case, he was already in a kind of isolation at the Glenrose Hospital long before the rest of us after he fell and broke his back.

One of the very best things about the year has been talking to innovative people who come up with ways to stay sane, and Brennan’s brutally honest outlook and ability to laugh — and keep making art — are lessons for us all.
