Year in Review: Unbound creativity in lockdown

My favourite story of 2021 was unquestionably the Edmonton Opera’s Wild Rose Opera Project , for which the company commissioned four new short operas for filming and streaming on the web.

It was inventive, showed what could be done in lockdown, and supported Alberta-connected creators and artists. It reminded us that opera is not just a product of the past, but a living, always regenerating art form. It had its own sub-theme of stories loosely around the theme of mental health, and produced four very different works that were both entertaining and thoughtful. Best of all, it reached out to Edmonton Opera’s faithful audiences, and indeed still does, for all four operas are available for streaming free .

It was a fitting farewell from departed general director Tim Yakemic, and a harbinger of the future for incoming artistic director Joel Ivany.
