A local community group says cash from its donation boxes and some small electronics were stolen early Sunday morning.
“It’s still heartbreaking. You feel that sense of security broken, somehow. I’m in the building most of the time, so it’s a little scary,” said Sim Senol, a director at The Turkish Canadian Society of Edmonton.
The society is housed in a surplus school building in the Canora neighbourhood that hosts a variety of programming in the building, including Turkish and English language classes, a drama club, Koran classes, volleyball, basketball and a women’s Cooperative, Senol said.
Cash collected from the donation boxes normally goes toward operating expenses, people in need, community members, or a Mosque project in the works.
The donations had not been collected for months and Senol said she did not know how much money they contained. The event has left her shaken but not deterred.
“I’m not going to give up of course. I love doing this stuff.”
The society has reported the incident to police, and believes the alleged thief was recorded by security cameras
