Watch: Federal support for aluminum and steel workers announced in Leduc

The federal government announced funding for Edmonton area steel and aluminum workers at a news conference at Apollo Machine and Welding Ltd. in Leduc on Wednesday. Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi, MP for Edmonton Mill Woods, announced a budgeted $447,480 in funding would go to the company to support the purchase of new laser technology.

Douglas J. Hamre, research and development manager at Apollo Machine and Welding, said new equipment will lead to better feedback, more productivity and efficiency.

“We’re going to be upgrading from a very old style laser to a higher power laser, so that we’ll have the capability to travel faster,” he said. The new laser won’t use helium so they won’t be exposed to the price of helium should it rise again.
