Watch: Funding for autonomous farming announced

The Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network (CAAIN), a coalition of eight industry partners led by provincially funded Alberta Innovates, netted $49.5 million as the winner of the federal government’s Strategic Innovation Fund Stream 4 award.

AJ Nolin, product support specialist with DOT Technology Corp., was at the Alberta Innovates headquarters during Monday’s announcement to display the company’s automated combine that seeds, sprays and tills a field through an IPad app that helps map a farmer’s field.

“It’ll actually give the farmer, for lack of a better word, more autonomy as well. So he is free to go and enjoy his life and farm for eight hours a day instead of some of the guys that we know do 13, 14 hours a day,” said Nolin.
